Biden celebrates his majorities in Congress and jets off to Delaware for the weekend, as the crisis at the U.S. southern border spirals out of control.
Congratulations On Controlling Congress!
On Friday, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer joined President Joe Biden in the Rose Garden to mark the passage of Biden’s coronavirus stimulus package.
Biden congratulated members of the House and Senate on the very difficult achievement of passing “such a controversial, consequential piece of legislation” along party lines while controlling both chambers of Congress.
“I know how hard it is to pass major consequential legislation, particularly when we only have such minor, small majorities in both houses,” Biden said.
No Comment On Cuomo As Pressure Mounts To Resign.
As the Bidens departed Washington for Wilmington, Delaware, to spend the weekend at their family home, Biden ignored a shouted question about whether Governor Andrew Cuomo should resign.
Press secretary Jen Psaki had no announcement on the matter in Friday’s press briefing. Meanwhile, pressure for Cuomo to resign is growing among Republican and Democrat lawmakers alike, including Reps. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Jerry Nadler and Sens. Chuck Schumer and Kirsten Gillibrand,
Due To Influx, Biden Administration Illegally Holding Migrant Kids In Steel Cells.
Biden officials have admitted that they are unable to expand bed space rapidly enough for the influx of unaccompanied migrant children and teenagers—29,792 in February—who have been stranded in concrete detention cells for as many as ten days, far exceeding the 72-hour legal limit.
The Texas Tribune reports:
In recent days there have been more than 3,500 unaccompanied teens and children stranded in steel-and-concrete detention cells designed for adults, waiting for shelter beds to open up, the latest Department of Homeland Security figures show. The minors are spending an average of 108 hours in Border Patrol stations before transfer to shelters run by Health and Human Services, well in excess of the 72-hour limit required by law. More than 130 minors have been waiting 10 days in the custody of U.S. Customs and Border Protection.
Immigrations and Customs Enforcement has emailed senior staff urgently seeking volunteers to held staff the maxed-out facilities. Despite the soaring numbers and scrambling behind the scenes, the White House refuses to call the unmitigated influx a “crisis.”
“I trust the Biden administration’s policy to be based on humanitarian and love of children rather than political points or red meat for their—for their Republican base,” Pelosi said Thursday of the situation.
Rep. Henry Cuellar, a Democrat from Texas, criticized Biden officials’ visit to the border last weekend. “Any president should come down [and] really spend time with border communities,” Cuellar said. “You know, the president sent a delegation and a bunch of folks from the White House. They didn’t talk to anybody, not even members of Congress down here.”
